The Life magazine photo archive was posted online last week, hosted by Google. The archive dates back to the 1860s but mostly covers the 20th century with never-before-seen images of many important historic events: Civil War, San Francisco earthquake, Pearl Harbor, JFK’s assassination, NASA missions, Olympics, and the list goes on an on. It’s a fascinating look back through history.
This photo was taken by Alexander Gardner in October 1862 at Antietam, Maryland. It shows (left-to-right): Major Allan Pinkerton, US President Abraham Lincoln (wearing his trademark stovepipe hat), and General John A. McClernand, in front of a pitched tent on a Civil War battlefield.
