Since 1974, the Nikon International Small World Competition has recognized photography that demonstrates the marvels of the microscopic world.

Paul Marshall of Canada’s National Research Council took this 30X photograph for his study of an atypical carbon nanotube growth run.  Carbon nanotubes are microscopically small forms of carbon.  They exhibit extraordinary strength and unique electrical properties and are efficient conductors of heat.  Carbon nanotubes show promise for optical, medical and electronic applications.  This image won second place in Nikon’s 2008 Small World competition.
